Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is a sugar maple - beech - birch - hemlock forest with distinctly northern affinities. Stand composition is very unusual for the northern Blue Ridge region, where beech is rare a higher elevations and is similar to many forests occurring in the high Allegheny Mountain region of Highland Co. Virginia and adjacent West Virginia. Tremendous numbers of tree seedlings, particularly those of beech and white ash, occur in the plot.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. On flat by stream in gentle upper portion of White Oak Canyon, ca. 75 meters below the Old Rag Fire Road.
