Observation Narrative
The forest growth documented by this plot of part of the 25 acre old growth hemlock-hardwood stand occurring on gentle topography from the Limberlost east to the main headwaters branch of Whiteoak Canyon. The presence of Picea rubens, Circaea alpina ssp. alpina, Oxalis montana, Streptopus roseus var. roseus and Sorbus americana is indicative of the northern affinities of the stand. Apparently, infestation of this magnificent forest by hemlock woolly adelgid has been held back to some degree by the application of a pesticide.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. Just west of the Limberlost Trail at a point just north of the footbridge over stream draining the swampy portion of Limberlost and ca. 0.45 mi. ENE of Timber Hollow Overlook.
