Observation Narrative
A dry, scrubby high elevation boulderfield located on a very steep slope convexity. Only scattered, highly gnarled specimens of Betula allegheniensis exceed 6 m. in height and the open canopy is dominated by shrub sized Sorbus americana. Formidable growing conditions, plus the complete domination of available microhabitats by rhizomatous colonies of Polypodium appalachianum, limits species richness in this plot to 11 taxa.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. About 230 meters NE of The Pinnacle and ca. 100 meters downslope of the ridge crest at a point 100 meters NE of The Pinnacle.
