Observation Narrative
This dry, convex, steeply sloping bedrock exposure supports predominantly grassland vegetation with scattered shrubs and scrubby trees. All well developed soil mats have been preempted by Schizachyrium scoparium var. scoparium, Carex pensylvanica and other perennial forbs such as Bulbostylis capillaris and Talinum teretifolium are confined to bedrock crevices and gravelly shelves. A classic low elevation greenstone barren.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. On SW-facing slope ca. 230 meters north of Lewis Springs Falls and 75 meters east (upslope) of Lewis Spring Falls Trail.
No profile development. Very sparse and localized soil accumulations on ledges and in crevices. Soil material consists of thin, organic rich mats and some loamy colluvial material, very difficult to extract.
