Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is a distinctive, forb and graminoid rich, oak-hickory open forest/woodland. A number of species characteristic of basic and calcareous soils are present here, including Allium cernuum, Arabis canadensis, Draba ramosissima, Muhlenbergia sobolifera, Solidago ulmifolia var. ulmifolia and Viburnum rafinesquianum. Composition is similar to rocky woodlands occurring on Catoctin greenstone in nearby areas of the Blue Ridge. Bedrock at this site appears to metasiltstone (metashale) of the Harper's Formation.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. Just south of and adjacent to the Trayfoot Mountain Trail at a point 0.3 miles SW of Trayfoot Mountain summit.
