Observation Narrative
Plot is situated on a short, submesic, bouldery slope between two gentle benches on the western flank of Pass Mountain. Vegetation is typical of mid-elevation boulder and stone fields on Catoctin greenstone. Fraxinus americana, Quercus rubra and Tilia americana dominate the canopy and a diversity of herbaceous species occur despite limitations of overall herb stratum cover imposed by surficial boulders.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. WNW-facing slope of Pass Mountain, ca. 100 meters west of the Appalachian Trail at a point 0.35 miles SSE of Beams Gap Overlook on Skyline Drive.
