Observation Narrative
Plot located on a very bouldery slope in the transition zone between rich, Acer saccharum dominated forests of the lower slopes and subxeric Quercus dominated forests of the upper slopes. In this zone, Quercus rubra, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana and Carya spp. are common and herbaceous flora is moderately rich, although its cover and diversity are somewhat reduced by surficial boulder cover. Carya spp. are perhaps somewhat underrepresented in the plot compared to the overall stand.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. On west flank of the upper Rose River Hollow, about 0.6 mile NNW of Rose River Falls. Plot located on an ESE-facing slope ca. 50 meters upslope from a horse trail.
No profile development. Soils are probably all colluvial and consist of organic rich, dark silty material in small interstitial pockets among deeply piled boulders, stones and rock fragments. Sample extremely difficult to extract.
