Observation Narrative
This plot captures an open woodland on large, very steep greenstone outcrops exposed by the downcutting of Jones Run. Community quality is reduced by the presence of several exotic weeds, one of which (Commelina communis) is a dominant species in the stand. Since it is doubtful that any old homesteads or agricultural activities occurred on or near this rocky, inaccessible site, the origin of these weeds is somewhat ambiguous. Perhaps they were spread from somewhere upslope, finding the semi-open, fertile and periodically seepy habitat favorable for the establishment and persistence. Although not evident except for its dried inflorescences on the date of their sampling, Phacelia dubia var. dubia is phenomenally abundant here in early spring, based on observations made in April 1999.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. On steep, rocky, SE-facing slope above Jones Run Falls; plot can only be accessed by crossing Jones Run above the falls and traversing the slope laterally to the site.
Soil development confined to the less steeply sloping, horizontal ledges and crevices.. In some areas, thin layers of fine, dark brown loam (possibly colluvial) are present over bedrock.
