Observation Narrative
A rugged, remote and absolutely pristine greenstone exposure. The vegetation here is similar to that of much higher elevation outcrops in the central part of the Park around Stony Man and Hawksbill Mountains. A north aspect and sheltered slope position apparently contribute to microclimatic conditions that allow such vegetation and its northern species (e.g. Sorbus americana, Solidago simplex ssp. randii var. randii) to thrive at an unusually low elevation.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. Greenstone outcrop on north-facing slope of Mount Marshall, ca. 0.5 mi. NE of the summit and 0.3 mi. NNW of Skyline Drive at AT crossing in the saddle between South and North Marshall.
