Observation Narrative
This plot documents a montane oak-hickory forest with impressive species richness. Several Quercus spp. And Carya spp. Are present in the woody layers, along with Tilia americana, Acer saccharum var. saccharum, Betula lenta, Fraxinus americana, and Ostrya virginiana. The herb layer is rather lush with tall forbs, especially species unpalatable to deer (e.g., Cimicifuga racemosa, Asclepias exaltata). American chestnut was once a major canopy associate here.
