Observation Narrative
Vegetation on this upper slope is a Quercus rubra-dominated forest with associates of Fraxinus americana and Quercus alba. Carya spp. are prevalent in the subcanopy tree layers. The herb layer is dense and lush, with high cover by leafy forbs such as Caulophyllum thalictroides, Cimicifuga racemosa, Laportea canadensis, Thalictrum coriaceum, and especially Collinsonia canadensis. Castanea dentata was formerly important at this site and the current forest appears to be changing from post-chestnut mixed oak regeneration
to an oak-hickory association.
Plot location: just SW of Dry Run Falls Fire Road at a point ca. 0.2 mi. WNW of Skyline Drive at Dean Mtn. Gap.
