Observation Narrative
The plot is located on a steep, dry slope with considerable exposed mineral soil. The forest growth is characterized by relatively small (ca. 15 m tall, < 30 cm DBH) canopy trees, principally Quercus montana. Carya ovalis dominates the understory. Xerophytic graminoids (Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, Dichanthelium boscii) and low shrubs (Vaccinium pallidum, Spiraea betulifolia var. corymbosa)
contribute the majority of cover to a patchy herb layer.
Plot location: just downslope of Rocky Mtn. - Brown Mtn. Trail on eastern flank of Rocky Mountain, ca. 0.5 mi. NW of Brown Mountain Overlook on Skyline Drive.
