Observation Narrative
This is one of a subset of plots sampled to collect data on the distribution and ecology of Abies balsamea. The vegetation in this plot is the closest thing to an Abies balsamea "forest" in Virginia, but this unusually dense stand constitutes a relatively small patch within the prevailing high-elevation oak forest of the site (see plots SNP104, SNP105, SNP107). Significant Abies mortality from balsam adelgid has occurred in this stand, with snags and living trees about equal in number. Trees of all species have been "pruned" to a low stature by repeated exposure to wind and ice. Currently, Quercus rubra dominates in cover, Abies balsamea in density.
Plot location: S slope of Hawksbill, 0.3 mi. NW of Old Rag View Overlook.
