Observation Narrative
This is one of a subset of plots sampled to collect data on the distribution and ecology of Abies balsamea. This plot is located near the low-elevation limit of Abies on Hawksbill. Castanea dentata was apparently a co-dominant tree in pre-blight stands, and many chestnut logs are still evident throughout the area. The current stand is a mixed forest of Quercus rubra, Q. alba, and Betula spp., with scattered Tsuga canadensis and Pinus strobus. Small patches of Abies are scattered in the understory. Graminoids (Deschampsia flexuosa,
Carex pensylvanica) dominate the herb layer, which shows evidence of considerable herbivory by white-tailed deer.
Plot location: S slope of Hawksbill, 0.25 mi. NW of Old Rag View Overlook.
