Observation Narrative
This is one of a subset of plots sampled to collect data on the distribution and ecology of Abies balsamea. Here, Abies is a minor component of dwarfed Quercus rubra forests occupying wind-swept rocky, NW-facing slopes. The fir are more or less confined to outcrop ledges, where the otherwise very dense understories of Kalmia latifolia and Ilex montana are reduced. This is situated on a wind-blasted clifftop, where trees are mostly reduced to shrub stature. Because of the extremely dense vegetation and rocky terrain, it was not practical to sample a plot of more than 100 sq. meters.
Plot location: steep, cliffy slope of E side of Skyline Drive, 0.1 mi. S of Crescent Rock Overlook.
