Observation Narrative
The vegetation of this greenstone summit is a stunted and gnarled oak forest dominated by Quercus rubra (overstory), Acer pensylvanicum (sub-canopy), Hamamelis virginiana (shrub), and Dennstaedtia punctilobula (herb). The shrub and herb layers are very dense and consist largely of species immune to deer grazing. Castanea dentata was probably an important overstory tree in the pre-blight era.
Plot location: summit of Hightop, just N of old fire tower site.
