Observation Narrative
The plot documents part of an extensive, open, graminoid-rich Quercus rubra "orchard" that covers most upper slopes and crests in the Sugarloaf-Hogback Mtn area. The clonal grass Calamagrostis porteri covers large patches here; Deschampsia flexuosa var. flexuosa, Dennstaedtia punctilobula, and Lysimachia quadrifolia also exhibit patch-dominance. Potential environmental factors and historical land-use patterns that may have contributed to the distinctive physiognomy of these "orchards" need investigation.
Plot location: on knob NW of Skyline Drive between Hogback Mtn. and Sugarloaf.
