Observation Narrative
This sampling site is a strongly convex upper slope located in the zone of transition to the crest. Gnarled Quercus rubra specimens < 15 meters tall dominate the overstory; Betula lenta (sub-canopy), Kalmia latifolia (shrub), and Dennstaedtia punctilobula (herb) are prevalent in the lower layers. Castanea dentata was an important canopy tree here prior to the arrival of chestnut blight.
Plot location: just S of the crest of Hogback Mountain, 0.45 mi. ESE of the summit.
