Observation Narrative
Very lush ridgetop forest, dominated by Quercus rubra and Carya spp. Leafy, clonal forbs (Cimicifuga racemosa, Thalictrum coriaceum, Ageratina altissima, etc.) dominate the herb layer. Although the substrate is the Harper's formation and pH is low, soil samples from this site have high levels of pH and Mn. This perhaps explains why this stand resembles montane oak-hickory forests occurring on the higher metabasalt ridges of the Park. Alliaria petiolata and other shade-tolerant exotics are abundant.
