Observation Narrative
This plot documents a beautiful old-age forest growing on an undulating upland bordering the Western Branch Reservoir. Sandy loam soils are deep but extremely acidic and nutrient-poor. The dominant overstory trees - Fagus grandifolia, Quercus alba, Q. falcata, and Q. velutina - generally range from 70 to 80 cm DBH. Fagus and Ilex opaca comprise most of the understory. Kalmia latifolia is a scattered shrub. The herb layer is sparse.
