Observation Narrative
The plot was placed on a small hilltop bordering Lake Prince to document a very mature, mesophytic forest dominated by tall, large-diameter beech and white oak. A variety of small trees and shrubs, including Carpinus caroliniana, Cornus florida, Symplocos tinctoria, and Ilex opaca occur in the understory. Patches of low Vaccinium and a variety of low-cover herbs occur in the field layer. This is the most mature forest seen on the uplands bordering Lake Prince.
