Observation Narrative
Plot location: west-facing slope of ravine tributary of Lake Prince, ca. 0.4 miles ENE of jct. Rtes. 604 and 605.
This plot occupies a gentle, upper slope of a deep ravine. Soils here are less calcareous than on the lower ravine slopes, where shells are exposed (see plot SUFC001), but sufficiently so to influence composition of the mixed hardwood stand. The vegetation is similar to that of SUFC001, with the addition of Quercus alba and Liriodendron tulipifera as overstory co-dominants. The forests of this ravine are unusually mature, with scattered trees up to 120 cm DBH present.
