Observation Narrative
Plot location: west-facing slope of ravine tributary of Lake Prince, ca. 0.4 miles ENE of jct. Rtes. 604 and 605.
This plot documents a mature Fagus grandifolia - Quercus alba - Liriodendron tulipifera forest on a submesic ravine slope with infertile soils. Shrub and herbaceous vegetation is dramatically different (both in density and composition) from that of stands a short way down the ravine, where exposed shells have produced highly calcareous soils. Ilex opaca, Kalmia latifolia, Gaylussacia frondosa, and Cypripedium acaule are species indicative of the strongly acidic conditions in this part of the ravine.
