Observation Narrative
Habitat supports one of the richest deciduous forests in Virginia, significant for its size and continuous procession of lush herbaceous growth throughout the growing season. The plot is located in a small, former disturbance are of unknown origin (blowdown? old logging staging area?), and its woody vegetation represents an early successional stage of the community occupying this part of the Blue Ridge. In this area, the state-rare Trillium cernuum is a prominent member of the herbaceous layer. Cover of Impatiens pallida and Monarda clinopodia would be greatly increased in aestival aspect.
Plot located just east of a small knob 0.15 mi east of parking area #4 on Rt. 638.
