Observation Narrative
Habitat supports one of the finest "circumneutral seepage swamps" in Virginia, covering about 25 acres in a springy, braided, streamhead basin. In addition to its exceptionally lush and diverse flora, the community contains an outstanding population of the globally rare grass Poa paludigena and an abundance of the uncommon northern tree Fraxinus nigra in all woody layers. All trees >40 cm. dbh. Mean groundwater pH (5 samples) = 6.52. Mean groundwater temperature (deg. C, 5 samples) = 4.88.
Plot located at headwaters of Wildcat Hollow on western edge of seepage swamp, ca. 0.5 mi ENE of parking area #4 on Rt. 638.
