Observation Narrative
This maritime dune grassland has more southern affinities than the community at Savage Neck. Here Schizachyrium littorale is the dominant grass, along with Spartina patens. Panicum amarum is relatively unimportant, and Ammophila breviligulata is infrequent and restricted to the very narrow dune crest. Uniola paniculata becomes a scattered component as one moves farther south at Trower Bayshore. Hudsonia tomentosa was observed just outside the plot, and in the vicinity are scattered shrubs, chiefly Myrica pensylvanica and Pinus taeda. Many holes are evident in the sand; most are probably crab dens, but the presence of dead birds up the dune suggest a larger predator.
