NOTE: Plot not demarcated and cover not estimated. Cover class scores for all species entered as "1," indicating "present."
Back-dune scrub: short-statured trees and shrubs occur as scattered clumps or thickets interspersed between areas of open sand that may be thinly vegetated with Hudsonia tomentosa, Andropogon virginicus, Lechea maritima, Carex arenaria and Cladonia sp. Recent deflation hollows may be devoid of vegetation. The diversity and density of herbaceous species and grasses increase within tree/shrub thickets. Smilax spp. can be abundant both in thickets and in areas of relatively open sand. Although trees and shrubs are stunted in this zone, salt spray planation of growth form is not particularly prevalent.
Other surface substrate consists of miscellaneous garbage.
