Observation Narrative
The plot is located on the lower slope of a ravine and has an overstory dominated by two large-diameter oaks. More mesophytic species - Fagus grandifolia, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Carya spp. - dominate the subcanopy layers. The herb layer is overwhelmingly dominated by a large clone of Podophyllum peltatum. Unlike many similar stands nearby, this stand does not have a dense shrub layer of Asimina triloba.
0-2 cm: leaf litter / duff.
2+ cm: dark brown fine silty loam with traces of grit and washed pebbles
