Observation Narrative
Plot located on a long, narrow spur ridge crest on the Turkey Run Park bluff above the Potomac River. Despite the exposed, convex topography, the site supports a mature stand of Carya spp. and Quercus alba, a 91-cm dbh specimen of which is probably quite old. The forest is undergoing a successional shift toward more mesophytic species, with Fagus grandifolia abundant and some Acer saccharum present in the understory layers. More mesophytic forest with abundant Liriodendron tulipifera occupies the ravines on either side of this crest.
