Observation Narrative
This plot is located on a large bar complex at the confluence of the Potomac River and Turkey Run. The habitat appears to be accreting from both river-deposited materials and alluvial fan debris from the discharge of Turkey Run. The scrub vegetation in the plot is considered a woodland since many of the trees would exceed 6 m in height if they were not heavily flood-trained. All of the dominant sycamores have been greatly damaged in past floods and the tangles of leaning boles and branch sprouts made sampling a plot larger than 100 square meters impractical. Update: inspection of this site on 2004-10-19 revealed tremendous impacts from Hurricane Isabel. The scrub vegetation sampled in 2003 was almost completely destroyed and removed.
