Observation Narrative ? The plot was positioned in a very openly wooded boulderfield on the lower slope bordering the Potomac River floodplain. The substrate of this site has with 80% cover of relatively small, deeply piled, loose boulders. The high rock cover limits floristic diversity, and may also prohibit tree establishment and facilitate frequent windthrows. On the date of sampling (June 9), Impatiens pallida seedlings covered ca. 25% of the plot; by early September, these had attained heights up to 1.2 meters and collectively covered ca. 65% of the area.
