Observation Narrative
Drought stress among woody plants of this dry woodland was evident on the date of sampling. The vegetation here, though related to that of the adjacent plot WARR002, clearly differs in its physiognomic expression, with trees up to about 15 m tall forming a semi-closed canopy. The state rare grass Sporobolus compositus var. compositus grows on small rock outcrops within the plot and is unknown elsewhere on the northern Virginia Blue Ridge.
Plot located in dry, rocky woodland adjacent to greenstone outcrops on steep, southwest-facing slope ca. 50 m downslope of Shenandoah National Park boundary, 0.5 mi WNW of Dickeys Ridge Visitor Center on Skyline Drive.
