The vegetation here is a very diverse, dry, open oak-hickory-ash forest. The site is a "flat" just upslope from a series of low greenstone ledges, and soil is probably shallow to bedrock. The base-status of soil samples collected from this plot is notably high for the area, with relatively high concentrates of Ca, Mg, and especially Mn. Composition of this stand is very similar to that of oak-hickory diabase "flatwoods" in the northern Virginia Triassic Basin.
