Plot location: 0.4 km SW of the summit of Rappahannock Mtn.
Rock Types Present: massive metabasalt outcrops and loose debris.
The sampling site is an exposed, sloping greenstone outcrop supporting scattered, very stunted Fraxinus americana, Carya glabra, Quercus montana, and Pinus virginiana (no cover in plot). Stressful edaphic conditions apparently prevent the full establishment of trees, and several specimens of Quercus montana around the edge of these barrens have recently died. Opuntia humifusa, Carex pensylvanica, and Danthonia spicata greatly dominate the low vegetation here. Noteworthy associates include Trichostema setaceum, Talinum teretifolium, and Corydalis sempervirens.
