Observation Narrative
Plot location: 0.2 km NNE of the summit of Rappahannock Mountain.
Rock Types Present: large metabasalt outcrops and debris.
An extremely rocky habitat with small greenstone cliffs, ledges, and bouldery debris, supporting a somewhat stunted forest dominated by Quercus montana, Quercus rubra, and the deciduous ericads Gaylussacia baccata and Vaccinium pallidum. This vegetation has surprisingly high species richness considering the limitations imposed by rocky substrates and low-base soils.
Soil Nutrient Status: medium
No profile development.
Deep (3cm+) humus / root mat and duff among piled stones and boulders.
A few pockets of light brown, loamy mineral soil.
