Observation Narrative
Plot location: 0.83 km S of Rt. 703 terminus at Horner Run.
Rock Types Present: mixed quartzite and metabasalt debris.
This stand is situated on an extensive, gently sloping bench, which is typical of many low mountain areas underlain by Catoctin metabasalt. Debris from quartzite lenses interbedded with metabasalt a short distance upslope apparently underlies this part of the bench, which may account for low pH and base cation (except Mn) levels in soils collected at the plot. Vegetation here is a mixed oak (Quercus montana, Quercus alba, Quercus rubra) forest with some hickory. Herb cover is sparse but compositionally diverse.
