Observation Narrative
This plot represents a high salt marsh or "salt meadow" community subject to flooding only at spring tides, about twice a month. Floristically it is similar to countless other high marsh stands, except for the overwhelming dominance of Plantago maritima var. juncoides, a northern species which reaches its southern range limit here. This species has been recorded as a "waif" on Assateague Island, but otherwise is unknown in Virginia. Consequently this particular variant of high salt marsh is very rare in the Commonwealth.
Plot located at curve in Cow Gut Flat, at the northern end of Wallops Island.
