Observation Narrative ? Plot captures a small but distinct zone between upland edge and central Distichlis spicata - Spartina patens salt meadow. Here Schoenoplectus robustus and S. americanus co-occur, but patterns of dominance differ. The latter extends farther toward the marsh interior -- some stems are scattered along the edge of the salt meadow -- whereas the former dominates the landward side of the stand, where S. americanus is also present. Hence it would have been possible to lay out plot from which S. robustus would be excluded. In background of photo, extension of salt meadow is evident, beyond which vegetation grades abruptly through Spartina alterniflora to S. cynosuroides. Lowest portions of plot contain 5-10 cm of standing water at time of sampling.
