Observation Narrative
Location: inner part of the Potomac River floodplain, just west of the mouth of Dead Run, and ca. 340 m NNE of the George Washington Memorial Parkway bridge over Dead Run. The plot captures very rich, open, forest vegetation occupying a high, well-drained floodplain terrace adjacent to large cliffs on the west side of Dead Run. The terrace has evidently been formed by alluvial fan deposits onto the floodplain at the mouth of Dead Run; although part of the floodplain, it appears as a small, geomorphic "toe" of the adjacent upland slope. The forest is noteworthy for being dominated largely by upland trees - Acer saccharum, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Fraxinus americana. Several large Fraxinus are located just outside the plot and contribute overhanging cover. Matteuccia struthiopteris, Mertensia virginica, Asarum canadense, and Caulophyllum thalictroides co-dominate the herb layer in large patches.
