Observation Narrative
This plot is located at the back of an wide relict floodplain along the Chickahominy River. The river was originally tidal in this portion, but tidal fluctuations are now blocked by a dam. This part of the floodplain was not under tidal influence, and is rarely inundated by overland flow except perhaps in the most catastrophic floods. The plot captures the most mature portion of a mixed hardwood stand that occupies interior terraces that are slightly higher than first bottoms supporting baldcypress-tupelo swamps and slightly lower than the lowest upland terraces. Oaks (Quercus phellos, Q. michauxii, Q. pagoda, Q. alba) are prominent in the stand.
