Observation Narrative
Plot is located near the back edge of an extensive wet "flatwoods" on the very broad floodplain (0.8 km on either side of the channel) of the Chickahominy River. Hydrology is mixed. The site experiences occasional sheet flow, rare catastrophic flooding, and is strongly saturated by groundwater seepage emanating from the base of the upland slopes and flowing through the vicinity of the plot in braided rills and channels. Toward the river, both the seepage flows and the anastomosing channels feather out and disappear into the very extensive flatwoods. The forest vegetation in this plot is somewhat of a hybrid between a Coastal Plain acidic seepage swamp and a non-riverine saturated forest.
