Observation Narrative
A narrow plot configuration was used to capture homogeneous vegetation in this narrow, saturated stream bottom. A sand-bottomed headwaters stream flows just outside of and parallel to the plot. Vegetation is an open forest that is typical of Coastal Plain seepage swamps on acidic substrates; diagnostic species include Magnolia virginiana, Clethra alnifolia, Rhododendron viscosum, Viburnum nudum, and Carex folliculata. The upland oak/heath forests that surround this linear drainage have burned intensively within the past year.
