Observation Narrative
Plot located on an undulating terrace in an active floodplain near the channel of Swift Creek. The terrace lies at a slightly higher elevation and is better drained than extensive backswamps to the south. Vegetation is a mixed hardwood forest with variable overstory dominance by Platanus occidentalis, Liquidambary styraciflua, Betula nigra, Celtis laevigata, Ulmus spp., and Carya cordiformis. A dense shrub layer Asimina triloba, and Carpinus caroliniana is characteristic. The herb layer is composed primarily of common alluvial forbs and graminoids, but contains a few nutrient-demanding species (e.g., Asarum canadense) at low or moderate cover. Except for Stellaria media, invasive exotics are surprisingly sparse.
