Observation Narrative
Like plot POSP011, this plot contains oak- and sedge-dominated floodplain vegetation. However, it occupies a drier site in a slight depression at the back of the floodplain adjacent to the upland slope. It appears that surface flooding is very infrequent here, although soils are probably somewhat poorly drained, as indicated by orange-mottling of the B-horizon. In contrast to POSP011, Quercus phellos is the overstory dominant, with minor Liquidambar styraciflua and Q. michauxii also present; Q. palustris is absent. The shrub and herbaceous flora contain a mixture of common floodplain species and species more characteristic of wet, poorly drained sites.
