Observation Narrative
Seepage forest in backswamp of floodplain near base of bluff. Substrate is a very deep, organic muck, with groundwater near the surface. No exotic plants occur in this habitat. The vegetation consists mostly of even-aged, fairly small-diameter trees over a dense and diverse understory. At last twenty shrub and vine species occur in the stand. This swamp differs from most Coastal Plain acidic seepage swamps in its environmental setting, the dominance of Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and the presence of hydrophytic oaks (at low cover in plot).
