Observation Narrative
Well-drained floodplain forest on levee by Appomattox River. NW corner of plot is about 20m from river. Species richness is high and composition includes species characteristic of both upland and floodplain habitats. The overstory is diverse and difficult to characterize - Quercus phellos, Liriodendron tulipifera, Liquidambar styraciflua, Platanus occidentalis, Quercus shumardii, Carya cordiformis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Acer rubrum, and Ulmus americana are all important in parts of the overall stand. There are surprisingly few exotics for a large floodplain.
