Observation Narrative
A rather sparse shrubland occupying crevices of a massive, fractured, steeply sloping granitic outcrop at ca. 1100 m elevation. The vegetation is subjected to low winter temperatures, wind, and ice. During summer, temperatures on the rock surfaces are high and moisture is scarce. Lichens recorded at this sampling site were Lasallia pensylvanica (abundant), Lasallia papulosa (abundant), Stereocaulon glaucescens, Melanelia stygia, Porpidia sp., Umbilicaria muhlenbergii, Acarospora fuscata, Rhizocarpon cf. reductum, Xanthoparmelia sp., Rhizoplaca subdiscrepens, and an abundant gray crust.
