Observation Narrative
Plot captures part of a pristine barren on a very steep, smooth granitic face. Periodic ephemeral seepage down the rock face likely influences the development of thick bryophyte mats (Grimmia laevigata, Polytrichum sp., Hedwigia ciliata) that, in turn, support relatively dense graminoid patches of Schizachyrium scoparium, Deschampsia flexuosa var. flexuosa, and Danthonia spicata. Drier outcrop surfaces lacking vascular plants are dominated by the lichen Xanthoparmelia conserpsa.
