Observation Narrative
Plot was placed on a narrow, plunging metabasalt outcrop, with its long axis running up-down the slope . This outcrop is a "spine" that drops off precipitously on either side to bouldery slope concavities supporting northern hardwood forest. The habitat and vegetation are in pristine condition and representative of outcrop barrens that occur on the highest-elevation metabasalt exposure of the northern Virginia Blue Ridge. Conspicuous lichens on the exposed rock surfaces include Umbilicaria muehlenbergii (dominant), Lasallia papulosa, Stereocaulon glaucescens, Xanthoparmelia conspersa, Acaraspora fuscata, and Rhizocarpon geographicum. The bryophyte Grimmia laevigata is present in depressions that are periodically moist.
