Observation Narrative ? This plot is located about 55 m east of and 24 m in elevation lower than plot SHNP152. Like the latter, this plot was placed on a narrow, plunging metabasalt outcrop, with its long axis running up-down the slope . On the date of sampling, the vegetation was suffering from prolonged drought and most plants were brown or wilted, although still identifiable. The habitat and vegetation are in pristine condition and representative of outcrop barrens that occur on the highest-elevation metabasalt exposure of the northern Virginia Blue Ridge. Conspicuous lichens on the exposed rock surfaces include Umbilicaria muehlenbergii, Lasallia papulosa, Lasallia pensylvanica, Rhizoplaca subdiscrepens, Stereocaulon glaucescens, Xanthoparmelia conspersa, Acaraspora fuscata, Parmelia cf. omphalodes, Parmelia sulcata, Cladonia spp., and Rhizocarpon geographicum.
